Columbia Finds Learning How To Dance To Be Good Therapy

I just read a really interesting article.  It talks about a reletively new dance company in Columbia called the "College of the Body."  Check it out:

http://www.popmatters.com/pm/news/article/33784/in-chaotic-colombia-a-dance-of-hope/

In this article, it explains how many youth are really struggling in Columbia with either violent acts or child prostitution, or other terrible things.  It then explains how this dance company is providing an outlet for these people, and actually helping them to improve their lives, respect their bodies, and inspire others.  I didn't know learning how to dance could do all of that too!

It makes sense though.  After all, learning how to dance is an achievement,  and it really does a lot for one's confidence when they see themselves improving and having more fun and comfortability dancing with others.  It helps the mind to stop feeling self-conscience.   I can easily see how someone who is suffering, or coming from a hostile environment could use dancing as an emotional outlet.

Since dancing is also a healthy exercise, I can see how classes can show people how to respect their bodies and help respect themselves in general.  I think it is a great thing to provide the youner generation with these kinds of opportunities and experiences.
