A Huge Dance In Miami For Peace

Have you heard of Earth Dance? It's like some intense hippie culture dance festival that started in London ten years ago. I guess each year its in a different city, this year its in Miami. If I lived there, I would probably check it out.

I'm not sure if this is the correct video for this festival, but the description of the videos for it in youtube were a little vague. Anyway, here's what I found:

Wow, those guys look pretty hippy-ish. I'm always a little scared of that culture, no matter how much love they have.

Apparently, the festival has something going on in several ciites as well that "An estimated one million people spanning 350 locations and 60 nations will unite Saturday for what has been dubbed the world’s largest synchronized music and dance festival for peace." (taken from http://blogs.miaminewtimes.com/riptide/2007/09/give_peace_a_dance.php)

Very interesting, I wonder if there is something going on where I live. I starts this saturday, so look it up, and join some crazy dancing for the sake of "peace."

Kids Learn To Dance In China

As some of you may or may not recall, a few weeks ago, I wrote about how grade schools in Hawaii were starting to implement the video game "Dance Dance Reveolution" into their phys. ed.  requirements as a way for kids to fight obesity.  I have always argued that dancing is a great way to lose weight, but I felt that using a video games to do this was cutting short the full potential of learning how to dance because it denies the social aspect.

Well, I have just read that China is having their students learn the waltz as a phys ed. requirement.  Their intentions are the same - to help children become more physically involved, and to fight the growing problems with obesity in their country.  But they are doing it one step better because they are having the students learn to dance with real partners, instead of a video game.  They realize the social aspects that dancing  can bring to the students as well.

It seems that China, much like the United States, has been having a growing issue with child obesity.  The article I read about this from explains that this is a cause of the "one couple, one child" policy that China has had in hope of reducing the population.   They say that having one child is causing loving parents and families be treating their children with an abundance of food and candy.

Another explanation for the recent health problem was the busyness of the students schedules, because many students, on top of having a normal full school day, also tend to take music lessons, and additional classes outside of school such as english, and math in order to help them get ahead.  Add all this with a ton of homework, and then there is not much time to run around after school.

I don't know how much of that is true, but either way, I think learning how to dance is a great way to solve the problem.  I was a bit surprised they are going to learn the waltz, however, simply because it is a little more difficult of a dance to learn than other styles.  Also, because it is a less popular dance that kids can use in a real life circumstance.

The article says that secondary school teacher will also be required to learn the dances so that they can properly teach the students.  And the students will practice the dance both in gym classes and inbetween classes.  There will also be regular gym activites.

    Illegal Dancing In NYC?

It has apparently existed for 80 years, but I've only just heard about it. Did you know that it is illegal to dance in bars in NYC? The biggest culural center in the United States doesn't have legal dancing venues everywhere.

Surely, this couldn't be a heavily enforced law, I know I have danced in several bars in New York, and I don't recall anyone having a problem with it. But apparently there are only 170 venues in all of Manhattan that allow dancing. It became a bit issue again with Giuliani.

The reasons that I could understand had to do with noise. I can't even imagine how many noise complaints the police must receive in New York. 8 million people in like a 10 square mile area? Yeah, that could probably get a little loud.

This law has recently cause such a stir that the people of New York City decided to have a protest against these laws. They are called "cabaret laws".
This did not seem to be like too much of a protest as it did a fun day in the city however. I found a vdeo documenting some of this:

Still, very interesting, I can't believe these laws have been going on there. This happened a few months ago, so I don't know what the outcome was, or what thecity intends to do about this. I'll post if I find out.

    The New Dance Workout?

    Hey Guys,

I was searching around on youtube for some interesting dance videos to put up, and I found this:

I'm not really a big fan of the song to be completely honest, but the video looks like a lot of fun.  The treadmills are pretty much doing all the dancing for them.  It kind of reminds of that jamiroquoi video "virtual insanity".  Although in that one I think the singer had a little more dance skills than this crew.  What do you think:

I have heard that in this video, instead of running a bunch of treadmill like belts on the ground, the drector had a crew of people sliding the whole room around. That must have been very disorienting! He really does a good job of making all the movement of the room believable, and he has some nice style. I like this song better too:)
